"The book starts with a bang from the very first chapter and just races along from there. It's a different sort of thriller, one I found to be very engrossing and compelling--a fast-paced page-turner with heart and substance." - reviewer Kelli Gray is a law student at the University of Pennsylvania. After overcoming a difficult past, Kelli's life is finally stable. But her hard-won peace is shattered the night she witnesses the brutal murder of her best friend Nikki at the school. The attack is one in a rash of slayings that throws the university and the city into hysteria. Floyd Cane, a former university maintenance engineer, now lives on the streets in order to avoid his memory-filled house where his wife and two daughters were killed one year earlier. Floyd's oldest daughter was a Penn Law student, and he is convinced that his family's death is somehow linked to the current murders. Cops dismiss Floyd's suspicions as the madness of a vagrant's unhinged mind, but certain evidence supports Floyd's theories and Kelli slowly begins to listen. The discovery of yet another victim propels this unlikely pair into a race to find the killer, and the clock is ticking. Kelli and Floyd soon uncover the dark, sadistic secret past of someone familiar to both of them---a secret that may just be the key to finding the Puppeteer. And one that forces Kelli to confront the ghosts of her own painful past, and face the terrifying possibility that she herself has more to do with the murders than she ever imagined.
The Puppeteer Melanie Breaux Books
"The Puppeteer," a new crime thriller by Melanie Breaux, captures your attention from the very first sentence and refuses to let go. Its precise, evocative prose brings each scene and scenario to life: you feel the chilly wind blowing between buildings in Center City Philadelphia, hear the thumping bass of the music at Sean's club, and see the sadness in Kelli's eyes when she visits her fading grandmother. These details serve as subtle background music for the wholly engrossing story of an on-campus murder of an Ivy League law student. The girl's death itself is shocking, but the brutality of the crime makes it doubly so. Such that when the second female character is introduced, you immediately fear for her life. Breaux's protagonist is a strong, sympathetic woman, and you gladly take her hand (and wisely watch her back) as she searches for the truth. At turns riveted, breathless, and terrified, you hold on for the ride until the last word is read.
Speaking of the last word, my one "complaint" is a compliment--I wish the book were a smidgen longer. I want to savor the conclusion, revel in the satisfying end for another few paragraphs. I also want to know a bit more about the supporting cast, one character in particular who tugged at my heart. But that's a minor demerit of an otherwise brilliant book.
Ms. Breaux writes this gripping tale with the skills of a pro in her prime... which makes this debut novel even more astounding. And as much as I thoroughly enjoyed "The Puppeteer," I sincerely hope it will not be her last.

The Puppeteer Melanie Breaux Books Reviews
This is a very well-written book, one of the best novels I have read this year. It grabbed my attention right from the opening sentence. In fact, I loved the first sentence of the book. It clearly and cleverly signals what is to come the villain is a man; the victim is a woman; she will not survive; there will be more victims--we are dealing with a serial killer.
The character development of the several very true-to-life characters and their individual stories and subplots are woven together so skillfully and convincingly into the overall plot and resolution of the novel, it is hard to believe this is a first novel. The convergence of the plot from such multiple angles was outstanding.
Finally, I must say that despite my smug belief at the outset that I had figured out the story from the first sentence, the ultimate resolution was totally surprising and awesome, filled as it was with twists and turns that shocked me. And yet, the developments at the end did not even come close to straining my "willing suspension of disbelief".
A great read. I hope Ms. Breaux publishes her next novel very soon. I can't wait.
Just when you thought crippling student loan debt and diminished job prospects were the most harrowing obstacles faced by today's law students, along comes The Puppeteer . . . As a thriller populated by lawyers and with the city of Philadelphia as a backdrop, similarities to Lisa Scottoline's work are obvious--except this book has none of the Scottoline cheese-factor. (And don't get me wrong, I also enjoy the cheese . . . ) It is dark, gruesome at times. Were it a movie--and it often reads like one--there are times I think the camera would cut away before the author does here. But murder isn't pretty, and the brutal realism gave me goosebumps and kept me reading way past my bedtime.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for entertaining, fast-paced thriller. I congratulate the author for such a polished first book, and I can't wait the next Melanie Breaux novel!
My is one of the best gifts I have ever gotten, but I tend to be leery about purchasing books, especially from new authors. However, I decided to purchase once I read the sample, which I always read before I commit to making a purchase well I was very glad I purchased The Puppeteer! This was a great read, the characters pulled you and were very believable. There also weren't any moments where I thought a character's reactions were unbelievable, which was refreshing. I kept thinking I was sure I knew who did it, but was delighted to find out that I was wrong. All in all for a debut novel I think the author did a great job and I will definitely keep a lookout for more books by Melanie Breaux. One other thing I also loved is I didn't notice any grammar errors, which is a huge pet peeve for me with editions.
I have to admit I was a bit hesitant to try this book as I had never heard of this author, but was intrigued by the sample chapters and the setting at an Ivy League university. And for the price, I had little to lose. I'm glad I gave it a shot. Melanie Breaux proves to have a very strong voice, and a deft hand in crafting a layered storyline and complex, multifaceted, likable characters. Without giving too much away, the author does not shy away from exploring the darker side of human nature, but also the power of redemption and compassion. I enjoyed getting to know the main characters, especially the homeless man, Floyd. I like my mysteries dark and twisty, but above all entertaining, and this fits the bill. Many of the scenes are very visual and read almost like a movie. Reminds me a bit of James Patterson or Sandra Brown in the pacing and plot. After I finished the book I was surprised to see in the author's bio that this is her first novel; it certainly does not feel like a first novel.
I almost gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 stars because I do think the author could have gone into more detail about the backgrounds of some of the characters. The book in places seemed to gloss over some of the more interesting (if minor) characters--like the bartender Anir. But then, I guess it's a good thing if you finish a book and your biggest gripe is that you want to know more about the world that the author created. Bottom line An entertaining, quick read. Some dark subject matter. Extremely strong first novel.
