Follow in the many footsteps of a curious traveller in search of roos, poos, Tassie tigers, lost prime ministers and the wild, weird and wonderful that is Australia. Professional author Dr Terry Marsh has been visiting Australia for many years, making copious notes and interpreting his finds from a perspective that blends observation with a wry northern England sense of humour, and, if he's being honest, sampling the wine and great food rather a lot, too. It all comes together in an idiosyncratic blend of people and places, flora and fauna, long drives and even longer rail journeys.
Down Under Dreaming Travels in Australia eBook Terry Marsh
It was the cover of this book that caught my eye and made me curious. They say you can't judge a book by its cover but maybe with this one you can - it's a wriggling serpent of a story that weaves together the author's many visits to Australia over the years. He's stayed at hostels and dined in fine restaurants, visited a lot of vineyards, clearly loves Australia and gets his enthusiasm across well. He's also got an eye for the quirky things in Australian life, like their ability to lose a prime minister and how to master the Melbourne hook turn when driving. And if you don't know what that is, check it out on YouTube!I'm only partway through the book yet but I'm enjoying it immensely and will be sorry when I get to the end. For me this is armchair travel at its best, vividly written, well-observed and well-written. I've never been to Australia but keep reading books about it for some reason - Bruce Chatwin, Howard Jacobson, Robyn Davidson, for example. And this is another fine addition to the Australian shelves.
